Pro-Rata Salary Calculator
Working part-time? Enter the full-time salary and hours, then your own hours, to see your pro-rata pay across the year.
Pro-rata pay scales a full-time salary down to the hours you actually work. Benefits and pension contributions are often pro-rated too — check your contract.
How pro-rata pay works
Pro-rata means "in proportion." A part-time salary is the full-time figure scaled by the fraction of full-time hours you work. If full-time is 40 hours a week and you work 24, you earn 60% of the full-time salary.
Pro-rata salary = full-time salary × (your hours ÷ full-time hours)
Pro-rata salary FAQ
- How do I calculate pro-rata salary?
- Multiply the full-time salary by your hours divided by the full-time hours. For example, a $50,000 full-time salary at 24 hours a week against a 40-hour week is $50,000 × (24 ÷ 40) = $30,000 pro-rata.
- What does pro-rata mean on a job advert?
- It means the quoted salary is the full-time equivalent. Your actual pay is scaled to the hours you work, so a part-time role advertised at a full-time figure pays proportionally less.
- Is pro-rata pay calculated before or after tax?
- Pro-rata scales your gross (before-tax) salary. Income tax, FICA and any state tax are then applied to that lower gross amount, so your take-home is reduced too.
- Do pro-rata employees get holiday pay?
- Yes — part-time and pro-rata staff are generally entitled to paid leave scaled to the hours they work, though the exact rules depend on your employer and local law.
