- Take-home 79.7%
- Federal tax 8.4%
- FICA 7.6%
- State tax 4.3%
Estimate only. Based on 2026 federal brackets, FICA and an approximate average state rate. Traditional 401(k) contributions (capped at the $24,500 2026 limit) lower income tax but not FICA; Section 125 health premiums lower both. Local taxes are not included.
Michigan state income tax
Michigan has a flat income tax of 4.25% after a personal exemption per person. Our estimate applies the state rate; city income taxes are not included.
Local taxes & deductions
24 Michigan cities levy their own income tax. Detroit charges 2.4% for residents and 1.2% for nonresidents who work there; most other cities (Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint and others) charge about 1% for residents and 0.5% for nonresidents.
Federal tax & FICA
On Michigan's average pay of about $68,000 a year (BLS QCEW, 2024) federal income tax and FICA account for roughly 76% of withholding, the flat 4.25% state tax most of the rest, and a city tax can add 1%–2.4%. FICA is 6.2% Social Security up to the 2026 wage base plus 1.45% Medicare.
Live in one state, work in another?
Michigan has reciprocity with Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. Residents of those states working in Michigan file Form MI-W4 (claiming nonresidency) and pay only home-state tax. Michigan city income taxes still apply to nonresidents who work in those cities.
