Income tax calculator by state
Estimate how much income tax you'll pay — federal, FICA and state — with your effective and marginal rate. Pick your state below; everything runs instantly in your browser.
Estimate only. Based on 2024 federal brackets, FICA and an approximate average state rate. Your exact tax depends on deductions, credits and local taxes.
Effective vs. marginal tax rate
Your marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar of income — the top federal bracket you reach. Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your income, which is always lower because the first brackets are taxed at lower rates. The calculator above shows both.
Self-employed income
If you earn 1099 or business income, use the self-employment tax calculator or the 1099 tax calculator to include the 15.3% SE tax and quarterly estimates.
