Arizona Paycheck Calculator
Arizona withholds federal income tax, FICA (7.65%) and state income tax at a flat 2.5%. You pick a withholding percentage of gross pay on Form A-4, from 0.5% to 3.5%; the default is 2.0%.
Estimate your Arizona take-home pay after federal tax, FICA and Arizona's flat 2.5% state income tax — one of the lowest flat rates in the country.
- Take-home 81.5%
- Federal tax 8.4%
- FICA 7.6%
- State tax 2.5%
Estimate only. Based on 2026 federal brackets, FICA and an approximate average state rate. Traditional 401(k) contributions (capped at the $24,500 2026 limit) lower income tax but not FICA; Section 125 health premiums lower both. Local taxes are not included.
Arizona state income tax
Arizona has a flat income tax of 2.5% on taxable income. Employees choose a withholding percentage on Form A-4 (0.5% to 3.5% of gross pay); new hires who skip the form default to 2.0%.
Local taxes & deductions
Arizona cities do not levy income tax on wages. Because A-4 withholding is a percentage of gross pay, it may not exactly match your 2.5% liability — check your choice if you owed or got a large refund last year.
Federal tax & FICA
On Arizona's average pay of about $72,000 a year (BLS QCEW, 2024) federal income tax and FICA make up roughly 87% of withholding; the 2.5% state tax is a small slice. FICA is 6.2% Social Security up to the $184,500 2026 wage base plus 1.45% Medicare on all wages.
Live in one state, work in another?
Arizona has reciprocity with California, Indiana, Oregon and Virginia. Residents of those states working in Arizona file Form WEC with their employer to stop Arizona withholding and pay only home-state tax.

Arizona paycheck FAQ
- Which Form A-4 percentage should I choose?
- For most single filers, 2.0% of gross pay roughly matches the 2.5% flat tax after the standard deduction. Lower earners can choose 0.5%–1.0%; higher earners with other income may pick 2.5% or more.
- Do Arizona cities charge income tax?
- No. Phoenix, Tucson and other Arizona cities fund services through sales and property taxes, so only the state's 2.5% income tax is withheld.
