Pennsylvania Paycheck Calculator
Pennsylvania withholds a flat 3.07% state income tax on wages, plus federal income tax and FICA (7.65%). Most municipalities and school districts also withhold a local Earned Income Tax, often about 1%, and Philadelphia charges its own wage tax; these local taxes are not included in this estimate.
Estimate your Pennsylvania take-home pay after federal tax, FICA and Pennsylvania's flat state income tax.
- Take-home 80.9%
- Federal tax 8.4%
- FICA 7.6%
- State tax 3.1%
Estimate only. Based on 2026 federal brackets, FICA and an approximate average state rate. Traditional 401(k) contributions (capped at the $24,500 2026 limit) lower income tax but not FICA; Section 125 health premiums lower both. Local taxes are not included.
Pennsylvania state income tax
Pennsylvania charges a flat state income tax of 3.07% on wages.
Local taxes & deductions
Many Pennsylvania municipalities and school districts add a local Earned Income Tax (often around 1%) that is not included in this estimate.
Federal tax & FICA
Pennsylvania's 3.07% flat rate is one of the lowest state income taxes in the country, so the federal layer dominates: at the state's average pay of about $71,700 a year (BLS QCEW, 2024) roughly 86% of total withholding is federal income tax and FICA. Note that FICA is charged on your gross wage before any 401(k) contribution, while federal income tax is not.
Live in one state, work in another?
Pennsylvania has reciprocal agreements with Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia. A resident of those states working in Pennsylvania files Form REV-419 with the employer and pays only home-state tax. Reciprocity does not cover local taxes: Philadelphia's Wage Tax (about 3.74% for residents, 3.43% for nonresidents) still applies to work performed in the city.

Pennsylvania paycheck FAQ
- Do I pay Pennsylvania tax if I live in New Jersey?
- No. File Form REV-419 with your Pennsylvania employer so only New Jersey tax is withheld. If PA tax was withheld, file a PA-40 nonresident return to recover it.
- Does reciprocity exempt me from the Philadelphia Wage Tax?
- No. State reciprocity only covers Pennsylvania's 3.07% income tax. Nonresidents working in Philadelphia still pay the city's nonresident Wage Tax.
