US federal law (FLSA) requires non-exempt employees be paid at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states and contracts use different rules — adjust the multiplier to match yours.
How overtime pay is calculated
Overtime pay is your regular hourly rate multiplied by an overtime rate — most commonly 1.5× (time and a half) for hours worked beyond 40 in a week under US federal law. Your weekly pay is your regular hours at your normal rate, plus your overtime hours at the higher rate.
Overtime pay = overtime hours × (hourly rate × multiplier)
